frenchman julian jeweils second ep on richie hawtins plus 8 label is sure to confirm jeweils status as one of technos most reliable talents. the four track ep encompasses everything jeweil has honed in his ten year plus career – tough sounds, high energy and a fusion of electro and minimal that hypnotises as much as moves you. thus far it has come on labels like cocoon and skryptöm records, whilst at the same time jeweil (real name julien bérard) has been busy playing underground parties all across his homeland.

the mysterious rod enterns the balans arena with an uncompromising, abstract techno affair. little can we tell you about this mysterious character. only that a famous dj from rodterdam is behind this alter ego and that he did a very well received ep on ben klocks klockworks earlier this year.
the music coming from this persona is one hundred percent puristic, stripped down, dj tool techno. with a capital t you have seen that right! no nonsense hypnotism as we rarely see it nowadays. three or four sounds per track, each pushed and stretched inside out for maximum result. these tunes are made for dark, strobe lid cellars or underground techno temples such as berghain.

the mysterious robotalco serves up four deep house cuts for nycs on the prowl. robos road kicks things off with the right amount of hissing strings and slow drifting vibes that win its a1 spot. next up we have it gets to me, which strips things back a bit with pulsing synths, sparse congas, and perfectly placed vocal snippets. on the b-side we get moon robot, it keeps things rolling with its stompy feel and more of whats becoming robotalcos signiture swirling synth pad sound. rounding up the release for b2 is zuk zuk, with its quirky low slung groove that develops into a latin percussive gem...its really a superb way to round off robotalcos otp debut. well done.

our favorite usa artist >strategy< finally returned with two excellent alternative house tracks!! a side, >the fixer<is unique mixture of dubby house and kind of italo disco sound. if you like the music of caribous daphni or four tet, you will like this song. b side, >another rain< is like a kraut rock oriented house meets thomas fehlmann. its for the fan of four tet or prins thomas or lo soul.

and once gain we are back. after a welcome pause dumb unit returns with an energetic four tracker from our man in nyc : elon. a long time label mate elon strips it all back to create a bumping and infectious groove that while resolutely dumb unit is uncharacteristic in its nakedness! no decor here, only pure syncopated and pushing rhythms to notch it up a tad. perfect for leading the lions back to the warehouse and off the beach into the cooler months. >put those shades away son we going inside<. the energetic pacers of elon are complemented by a deeper excursion, a superb exercise one remix that takes the original and works it into a pulsing main floor late night jam.

perc traxs transatlantic duo donor / truss return to the label for the follow-up to their >indifference ep< which was released at the start of 2010. since then they have recorded and remixed for a number of high-profile labels, most notably stroboscopic artefacts to which donor contributed an ep to the labels renowned monad series whilst truss appeared on the remix ep the preceded lucys debut album.

rather lightweight live album, only thirty four minutes long, three songs and some painful applause herding for an encore. the line-up is essentially the girls line-up, though john g. perry s been replaced by an also-excellent mike wedgwood. the production is clear but the mix misjudged: the admittedly nicely brought out bass sound dwarfs all other elements. in particular, pye hastings guitar is very low, the drums never seem to match the bass volume.

working non-stop, danny wolfers is back again on greeces echovolt label after last years acclaimed comeback dust remix. once again we see his trademark style of soulful, narrative electronic music spread across these four barrio tinged tracks, the standout being the massive poverties paradise which is a deeply emotional vocal excursion reminiscent of some of the most classic chicago cuts with the signature legowelt stamp planted firmly on it. not to be missed!
